Accommodations and Transportation for the

SSP Conference at Temple University

October 16-17th, 2004

As you plan your trip to the SSP Conference, here are some accommodation and transportation suggestions to assist you. Please remember that you must seek out accommodations and transportation on your own; however, the SSP is happy to offer advice if possible, just send an e-mail to stphilsociety@aol.com with your questions.

All panels to be held in Anderson Hall, 1123.  Here is a Temple University map.

Where to Stay:

The best place to stay is in "Center City", where public transportation is available to take you to Temple’s campus. It is 10-15 minutes south of Temple, and easily accessible via the Broad Street Subway ("the orange line"), which runs north/south on Broad Street (equivalent to 14th Street). Specific hotel suggestions are included on the next page.

An important note: only the local Broad Street train (the one with white lights on the front of it) goes to Cecil B. Moore Station (the Temple stop), so if you get on an express train (with green lights on the front of it), you will zoom by your stop and have to switch over to a southbound train at the next stop. Running perpendicular to the Broad Street line, the Market Street line allows you to travel east/west along Market Street. It is free to transfer from the Market Street line to the Broad Street line.

For more information on SEPTA, please visit their website at www.septa.org or e-mail the SSP.

Where Not to Stay:

Although Temple’s campus is quite safe, it is probably not the best option to stay near Temple University (except at the Conwell Inn which is on Temple’s campus), since the area around campus is not the best. Also, although cheap hotels can be found outside the city or in the airport area, public transportation to Temple’s campus from these areas is long and difficult.

Philadelphia’s Street System:

Philadelphia was one of the first American cities to adopt the grid system, so in Center City you can pinpoint your hotel on the map given its address—1403 Walnut will be between 14th and 15th Street on Walnut, etc.

Airport Transportation:

Check www.southwest.com, as Southwest Airlines flies into Philadelphia and has very good rates. Also, an excellent web resource for finding good airline prices is www.sidestep.com. Once at the airport (PHL is its code), you can get to your hotel in the center city-part of Philly in a variety of ways.

(1) Regional Rail is run by SEPTA, and is the train you will see past the curb of the terminal. It goes to stops in the city (30th Street and 11th Street, where the subway is located) and costs around $5 if memory serves.

(2) Shuttle buses can be procured for around $15 a person.

(3) Taxis from the airport to Center City are a $20 flat rate (plus tip). If you are going to a destination west of 30th Street, you will be on the meter, which can range from $15-25 (plus tip) depending on the traffic. If you are going to Temple University (staying at the Conwell Inn, for instance), be advised that your cab ride will be more expensive since it is not in Center City and is farther from the airport.

Hotels & Transportation Suggestions:

Here are some hotels where you may want to book a room. This list is not comprehensive, so feel free to look online for other options. If you have any questions about hotels or transportation, please feel free to email stphilsociety@aol.com.

(1) Wyndham Philadelphia at Franklin Plaza

Location: Junction of 17th St. and Race St. The Wyndham is three blocks from the

Broad Street Line (subway, also known as "the orange line"). The

Wyndham is a large-scale hotel.

Rates: $119 (double bed) for October 16th if you call and reserve a room.

However, if you reserve a room online, you may be able to get a web rate

of $107 provided that you pay at the time of booking. The web rate is

non-refundable.

(2) Rodeway Inn

Location: 1208 Walnut St., between 12th and 13th Sts. The Rodeway Inn is one

and a half blocks from the Broad Street Line (the Walnut-Locust stop).

The Rodeway is a small hotel.

Rates: $139 standard rate. There is also an internet user’s rate available if you

book online of $125. I called this hotel and they said the rate was $99 for Saturday night, so this may turn out to be the cheapest option. I also believe that the Triple-A rate is $10 less (if you are a member).

(3) Conwell Inn

have to take either the trolley ("the green line") or the Market-Frankford

Subway ("the blue line") to City Hall, and then transfer (for free) to the

northbound Broad Street Subway ("the orange line"). Allow around 30

minutes for this trip to Temple.

Rates: Probably the cheapest; call for information

Phone: (215) 382-4310

Note: This is an unusual place. Its rates are cheap, but it has certain behavior

codes for guests. If I remember correctly, different sexes on different

floors, and all guests must be in the hotel before a certain time at night.

Also, I heard that shorts and miniskirts are prohibited. Check with the

hotel for more information.

You will have to walk south a few blocks to the 11th St & Market station, take a Market-Frankford West train until City Hall, and then transfer to a north-bound Broad Street local train. Or, if you walk directly to the city hall station, just get on the north local Broad Street train.
